Week 19
25/08/07

Tank Farm

I had a lot of fun taking this weeks pictures.  They are different and mostly abstracts.

This area in downtown Auckland, was first used for timber trade and in the 1930s, it was used for bulk petrochemical storage, hence the name "Tank Farm".  Today it is used by the petrochemical, bulk liquid, fishing and marine industries.  The 500,000 tonnes of bulk liquids and cement, produces $1.2 million and 4,000 jobs for the Auckland economy each year.  The marine industry has more than 100 companies around Tank Farm with a $400 million turnover and $120 million worth of exports.  Now this area is proposed for a 4.24ha public park with 2.4km of public walkways.  It will also make room for 2500 apartments of up to 14 storeys high and office space for up to 8000 workers.  By 2011 there will be restaurants, bars, cafés, fish & fresh produce markets along Jellicoe Street and a marine events centre at the end of Halsey Street.  A new movable bridge for pedestrians and public transport will link the Viaduct Harbour with Tank Farm

Instead of the usual "Quote for the week", I proudly share with you a
little something written by my daughter

MAGIC WITH A CAMERA

Excitement, passion and enthusiasm taken where the weather allows.
With one push of a button the world is transformed from one that seems
quite ordinary to one of creative beauty.  In a world of the Happy Snapper,
nothing else exists, nothing else is seen except that which is the target.
That which becomes the fantasy.  That which tells the story.  In that
world there is beauty after the rain, reflections of houses and double takes.
A picture becomes like a painting which reflects colours and shades.
And blue water meets blue sky.  In that world there are feathers in the sun.
Blue tinted mountains as a backdrop to anchored boats.  A setting sun colours
and paints the sky with orange, purple and pink.  And a humble footpath
lamp becomes a piece of art amidst the branches.  In that world there is
magic with a camera and behind that camera is the excitement,
passion and enthusiasm - my mum.
